CAL Crochet Road Play Mat - Tutorial 3: Curved Road & Car

Crochet-a-Long Road Play Mat
Tutorial 3: Curved Road Square & Car

Welcome to episode three of my CAL for my Road Play Mat, and this week I am going to be showing you how to make the curved road square and a little car.

In total we will be making 20 squares, of which there will be 8 designs plus extras, to make a 4 x 5 square blanket/play mat (40cm x 50cm approx.). You can of course make up more duplicates of the 8 designs or even invent your own, to make this play mat into an even bigger project, as this CAL is completely modular!

So for this episode you will need the following materials;
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in Green
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in Grey
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in White
  • DK / Light Worsted weight yarn in a car colour
  • Pink scraps for tail lights
  • 3.5 mm E/4 crochet hook (or any hook size that is suitable for the yarn you are using)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Tiny amount of stuffing, you can use either toy stuffing or yarn scraps
You can of course use Aran / Worsted weight yarn if you prefer. We are working to a 10cm x 10cm (4" x 4") square, but as long as all your squares are the same size so you can join them together at the end, then that is fine, using aran / worsted yarn will just make them slightly bigger.

Abbreviations

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
sc2tog = single crochet two stitches together for decrease
st(s) = stitch(es)
ea = each

G = green
Gr = grey
W = white
CC = car colour
P = pink

This pattern is in US terminology.

You will need 3 Curved Road Squares for this CAL.

Curved Road Square

Row 1
Using G and a 3.5mm E/4 crochet hook, crochet 18 hdc foundation sts - (18)

If new to the hdc foundation stitch, please see video tutorial or alternatively you can chain 19 and work 1hdc in your 3rd st from hook and in ea st along, counting your last 2 chs as a hdc - (18)

Row 2
Ch1 (don't count as st here or onwards), TURN, 1hdc in 1st st and in ea st across - (18)

Row 3
Join Gr in ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 6 sts but join G when finishing last hdc (when pulling thru all 3 loops - this will now be referred to 'end of last st'), 1hdc in last 12 sts - (18)

Row 4
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 9 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in last 9 sts - (18)

Row 5
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 11 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 7 sts - (18)

Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 5 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in last 13 sts - (18)

Row 7
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 14 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 4 sts - (18)

Row 8
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 4 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in next 8 sts, then in next st yarn over with W, pull through Gr, yarn thru with W (see video if unsure, you can instead just finish st with W if you prefer as per normal colour changes), 1hdc in next 4 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in last st - (18)

Row 9
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 4 sts, then in next st yarn over with Gr, pull through W, yarn thru with W, 1hdc in next st but join Gr in end of st, 1hdc in next 9 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 3 sts - (18)

Row 10
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 3 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in last 15 sts - (18)

Row 11
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 7 sts but join W in end of last st, 1hdc in next st but join Gr in end of st, 1hdc in next 7 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 3 sts - (18)

Row 12
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 2 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in next 7 sts but join W in end of last st, 1hdc in next st but join Gr in end of st, 1hdc in last 8 sts - (18)

Row 13
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 8 sts but join W in end of last st, 1hdc in next st but join Gr in end of st, 1hdc in next 7 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 2 sts - (18)

Row 14
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 2 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in next 6 sts but join W in end of last st, 1hdc in next st but join Gr in end of st, 1hdc in next 8 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last st - (18)

Row 15
Ch1, TURN, 1hdc in first 2 sts but join Gr in end of last st, 1hdc in next 14 sts but join G in end of last st, 1hdc in last 2 sts - (18)

Fasten off and tie in all tails. For carrying tails see video for suggestions.

Car

Rows 1 and 2
Using CC and a 3.5mm E/4 crochet hook, ch6, 2sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in next 3 chs, 2sc in last ch, now crochet back into your chains again in the opposite direction with 2sc in first ch (same ch as last ch), 1sc in next 3 chs, 2sc in last ch - (14 sts in total from rows 1 and 2)

Round 2 (you're now working in the round - do not ch at beginning or join rounds)
*1sc in next st, 2sc in next st, 1sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st* repeat from * to * once more - (18)

Round 14
1sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog 4 times, 1sc in last 11 sts - (22)

Round 15
1sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog 4 times, 1sc in last 9 sts - (18)

Rounds 16 - 17
1sc in ea st around - (18)

Round 18
1sc in next st, sc2tog, 1sc in next st, sc2tog, 1sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog, 1sc in next st, sc2tog, 1sc in last 3 sts - (14)

Stuff your car at this point.

Round 19
Flatten the end of your car and slip stitch in next 7 sts joining each side as you go, working to 7 sts each side (see video if unsure) Fasten off and tie in all tails.

Finishing
Use Gr to sew on outlines of windows, use W to 'colour-in' your windows by sewing up and down inside your outlines. Use W to sew on front lights, 3 loops of stitches should be enough and repeat in P at back of car for tail lights. (you can also use red yarn for tail lights if you prefer).

Wheels
Using Gr, ch4, sl st in 1st ch to form a loop, work 6 sc into centre of loop, sl st in 1st sc to join, fasten off and sew 3 sts onto edge of car, leaving 3 sts unsewn, tie in all tails and repeat for other 3 wheels.

I hope you will join me on this fun CAL!
