How To Crochet a Newborn Baby Bib - Yarn Scrap Friday

Back in June I showed you how to crochet a newborn baby bib and here is the written pattern to go along with it.

I do recommend following the video tutorial as it explains some unusual techniques which may be hard to understand from the written version.



You will need;

  • DK/Light worsted weight yarn in baby blue or any colour you like and white
  • 4.0mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Either a Button or Velcro/Fastener 

Row 1
Crochet 22 dc foundation sts

Row 2
Sl st down last dc to start crocheting back into the foundation sts on the opposite side as to where you normally would, 3dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 21 sts, 3dc in last st - (27) See video if unsure.

Row 3
Ch1 (don't count as st here or throughout), TURN, 1dc in ea st across - (27)

Rows 4 - 13
Ch1, TURN, 1dc in ea st across - (27)

Row 14 (First Strap)
Ch1, TURN, dc2tog, 1dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog - (7)

Row 15
Ch1, TURN, dc2tog, 1dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog - (5)

Row 16
Ch1, TURN, 1dc in ea st across - (5)

Row 17
Ch1, TURN, 1dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog - (4)

Row 18
Ch1, TURN, sc2tog twice - (2) sl st down edge of strap back to main bib

Next Step
1sc in next 8 sts (on main part of bib)

Row 19 (Second Strap)
dc2tog, 1dc in next 5 sts, dc2tog - (7)

Row 20
Ch1, TURN, dc2tog, 1dc in next 3 sts, dc2tog - (5)

Rows 21 - 23
Ch1, TURN, 1dc in ea st across - (5)

Row 24
dc2tog, 1dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in last st - (5)

Row 25
2dc in 1st st, 1dc in next 2 sts, dc2tog - (5)

Rows 26 - 27
Repeat rows 24 and 25

Row 28
dc2tog twice, 3dc in last st - (5)

Row 29
3dc in 1st st, dc2tog twice - (5)

Rows 30 - 37
Repeat rows 28 and 29

Row 38
Ch1, TURN, 3dc in 1st st, 1dc in next st, 3dc in next st, 1dc in next st, 3dc in last st - (11)

Row 39
Note* If you wish to add a button, skip some dcs on this row for a button hole and chain in-between 
Ch1, TURN, dc2tog, 1dc in next 7 sts, dc2tog - (9)

Row 40
Ch1, TURN, dc2tog twice, 1dc in next st, dc2tog twice - (5) Fasten off and tie in all tails.

Finishing

Using your white DK/Light worsted weight yarn, crochet 1sc neatly around whole edge, working extra sts on the corners, fasten off and tie in all tails.

Sew on button or Velcro to finish.
